Finally getting back to work on my 55

Finally getting back to work on my 55

Finally getting back to work on my 55 after taking some time to help a friend out with another project.

Just finished installing the Taillight Gas Filler Conversion Kit from Rocky Hinge. Installing the kit was the easy part. Filling the old gas door is another story. When I striped the paint around the door I found old body work from door to taillight area. Welded plate in door area and spent a few more hour’s heat shrinking the metal to get it to a point where I could apply a thin coat of body filler.

Got the motor back from the machine shop

Got the motor back from the machine shop

Today we received motor back from the machine shop. It was in really good condition considering it's been 35 years ago that it was rebuilt. It's a 1967, 350 HP, 327. The biggest change was having hardened valve seat installed. It still had the old rockers so we stepped up for new roller rockers. New rings, rods & main bearings, oil pump and had the heads completely rebuilt.
Next step will be dressing her up. New intake, carb and valve covers. And I am sure I will add a few other shiny parts before its back in the frame.1955 chevy motor

1957 Chevy rear end into the 1955 frame

1957 Chevy rear end into the 1955 frame

Today we installed the 1957 rear end in the 1955 frame.  I think my daughter might be getting the hang of this rebuild thing.  She still has some trouble with hammering in the axle but overall did a great job.

The '57 has a drain plug in the bottom of the housing.   We are also running Disc brakes, 370 gears and new posi traction unit, and we installed the New Big Bearing kit from Tri-5WeeCrafted.com.  We have replaced the bearings with new 58/64 axle bearings.  Still need to install the rear sway bar and rear shocks.  Front end will be put together next.

Pulling the 55 Chevy apart day 1

Pulling the 55 Chevy apart day 1

Pulling 55 apartToday we pulled the body off the frame. Lots of cleanup to do. I plan on building a x-member into the frame. I was surprised at how flexible that frame is. I will continue with stripping the paint off the body, dismantling the rest of the frame.

Removing 40 year old paint from the '55 Chevy

Removing 40 year old paint from the '55 Chevy

Removing paint from 1955 Chevy

Next step is removing the 40 year old paint. I am removing it with this little single edge razor. Just the black paint peels off.

My daughter Crystal wouldn't stick around for this one.  She said it sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard.  I must be getting old (and deaf) because it didn't bug me at all.

I'm thinking she might look good red and white. What do you think?Save

Oh my rusted 1955 trunk

Oh my rusted 1955 trunk

One of the big problem area's for rust on the Tri-5's is the trunk area. My 55 was starting to get bad. The paint was starting to blister behind the rear bumper. I should have done something a few years back. I cut all the rust out and installed new reproduction trunk panels. Rusted 55 Chevy rear end
